- Haunted House (Atari 2600) In Hindsight
Could Anything Be More Perfect For Halloween? Haunted House is a very simple game at its core. Search the four floors of the house, room-by-room, until you find 3 pieces of a magical urn. After that all you need to do is get out of the house. Simple enough! You aren’t alone here though as… Read more: Haunted House (Atari 2600) In Hindsight - Inexistence Review
Inexistence is proof that even a mostly average and almost completely derivative game can still provide an enjoyable if not particularly memorable experience. I had a great time with this title, but for the life of me I can’t describe the vast majority of levels, bosses, or events that drive the gameplay along. Combat Sword… Read more: Inexistence Review - Xeodrifter Review
Quality Metroid clones don’t come around everyday and Xeodrifter, even for it’s flaws, is one of the most fun I’ve experienced. For some the 10 dollar price tag and relatively short 3-4 hours worth of gameplay might be off putting, but Xeodrifter provides an unoriginal, but enjoyable few hours of exploring various alien worlds while… Read more: Xeodrifter Review - Salt and Sanctuary Review
2-D Dark Souls….Yeah I’m On Board With That As you create your character and emerge into gameplay on an old ship dripping with despair it’s no surprise that SKA Studios has perfectly melded their classic hand drawn art style with engrossing Dark Souls and Metroidvania esque gameplay as promised. What might be seen as a cash… Read more: Salt and Sanctuary Review - Bloodless Character Review – Bloodstained
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night received an unexpected free update recently for Steam, GOG, PS4 and Xbox. November 10th brought two pieces of content, the chroma wheel customization option and a new playable character. Bloodless is a fan favorite character, but is she fun to play? - Romancelvania – Kickstarter Spotlight
Leave it to the combo of Kickstarter and indie developers to bring gamers another original, interesting, if not polarizing game concept in Romancelvania. Coined “Dracula meets the Bachelor”, this gaming convection of genres coming from a slew of industry veterans aims to fill a void that Metroidvania and RPG fans were unaware existed. Developer The Deep End Games has made pretty good progress in meeting their $200k funding goal over the last month and with only 3 days left in the campaign, this is crunch time for fans of quirky Metroidvania titles and just creative game design in general to consider helping put a stake through the heart of the remaining $70k. - Rogue Legacy 2 Early Access Release Date
2013’s Rogue Legacy was an instant classic and it’s no surprise that Cellar Door Games is looking to bring fans another dose of family dysfunction and rock solid 2D exploration in 2020. The developers just dropped a rather quirky trailer to announce that Early Access is right around the corner. - Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 2 Announced
ArtPlay and Inti Creates just dropped an unexpected bombshell on Castlevania and Bloodstained fans alike today. Koji Igarashi and team have clearly been hard at work and excited to announce a direct sequel to the well received Bloodstained Curse of the Moon. Merely a stretch goal for the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter campaign, Curse of the Moon was a love letter to the good old days of 8-bit action games and not to be missed. - Freja and the False Prophecy – Kickstarter Spotlight
Freja and the False Prophecy aims to bring a dose of Norse mythology to the metroidvania scene. The Kickstarter campaign is quite well realized with a playable demo and plenty of information to let backers know what to expect. Unfortunately, with only 15 hours remaining, the development team Unsigned Double is about $2,000 shy of their $22,000 goal. From my time reviewing the campaign and demo, these devs have a high quality product on their hands that any fan of 2D side-scrolling adventure games should reach out to and support. - Castlevania Requiem Officially Announced By Konami Today
Konami just dropped a brand new trailer today, putting an end to the rumors on what exactly this so called “Castlevania Collection” would entail. Titled Castlevania Requiem, the collection will be a PS4 port of both Symphony of the Night and Rondo of Blood. Little is known about which versions of each title will be released. Will SotN be a direct port of the PS3 version or possibly a port from the Dracula X Chronicles. Both have their merits, but it would seem likely that a port of the original PS1 title, horribly good voice acting in tact, would be the best choice for the collection. Leaving out the 2.5D remake of Rondo of Blood, makes it apparent that Konami is wanting to keep a more rooted feel to the collection. - Castlevania Collection Rumored for PS4 Release
With the recent announcement of Simon and Richter Belmont coming to Nintendo’s legendary Super Smash Brothers series later this year, Konami and Castlevania fans have been hopeful that the series is ready to be resurrected after a nearly 5 year slumber. Some very interesting news broke regarding two of the finest titles in the series today and the potential of an even bigger collection. - Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon Announcement Trailer
Bloodstained and Castlevania fans alike have been waiting patiently for news on a release date of Koji Igarashi’s brand new title after leaving Konami. Some great news came out of BitSummit 2018 in Japan this year and that was the announcement of the promised retro tie-in game funded during the Kickstarter campaign. - Beyond Human – Kickstarter Spotlight
With less then 48 hours left in the Kickstarter campaign, Beyond Human is a superbly polished and insanely fun metroidvania title that needs some help from the community to hit it’s funding goal. Beyond-Human’s initial release will be available for Windows, Mac, PS4, and PS Vita. The PC release will be distributed on Steam as well as GOG.com. It’s been depressing to see quality titles like Necrocosmos not hit their funding goals recently and I’d hate to add Beyond Human to the list. - Metroid: Samus Returns – Overview Trailer
A new official trailer was dropped for Metroid: Samus Returns today. Dubbed the Overview Trailer, fans looking for a bit more information on the game will find some interesting tidbits about Samus’s new Aeion powers and a list of uses for all 4 Metroid Amiibos, even though the community has known about these for quite some time. - Nakawak – Kickstarter Spotlight
Who doesn’t want more adventure games inspired by the heydays of the GameBoy? Probably not many, but after stumbling upon the Kickstarter campaign for Nakawak, I can’t help but be impressed by the lone developers attempt at creating a GameBoy inspired Metroidvania title coming to Steam hopefully sooner than later. - Necrocosmos – Kickstarter Spotlight
To be released on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, Necrocosmos is bringing a new spin to the Metroid formula, introducing survival elements with a splash of randomized progression. Put simply, players will be challenged to explore multiple planets with unique environments and inhabitants, but the developers claim that progression will be randomly generated from player-to-player. An ambitious idea that I hope can be delivered upon. Check out our review of the Kickstarter campaign and demo. - Cave Story+ Special Edition for Nintendo Switch
Cave Story has come a long way since it’s humble beginnings in 2004. A great game indeed that has recently just seen a very limited run of physical copies put into circulation for the Nintendo Switch. Released on June 20th, I picked up my copy alongside a brand new Nintendo Switch. This isn’t going to… Read more: Cave Story+ Special Edition for Nintendo Switch - Unformed – Kickstarter Spotlight

This week I wanted to highlight an interesting non-linear action platformer called Blasphemous that is nearing the end of it’s Kickstarter campaign and is worthy of the attention of any Metroidvania fan. One look at the pixel art and smooth animation is enough to get any fan of the genre on board with what this dark and grisly title has to offer.

Since the begging of the Nintendo Spotlight at E3 2017, Nintendo has blown the doors off the whole event. From the relatively short, but dense with announcements conference spotlight to their post conference Treehouse event, Nintendo has proven that they have a lot of games in the pipeline for fans to look forward to. While… Read more: Two Metroid Games Announced at E3 2017 - Bloodstained E3 2017 Demo Gameplay Analysis
Thanks to Gematsu’s Youtube channel the community has access to 12 minutes of gameplay from this year’s playable demo at E3. There’s a lot to take in, but it looks like the development team has brought back many more staple weapons and abilities that should make fans feel right at home. As mentioned in… Read more: Bloodstained E3 2017 Demo Gameplay Analysis - Bloodstained E3 2017 Trailer Analysis
E3 2017 is well underway and there has been a handful of surprises already, but my most anticipated game of 2018 recently had a new trailer drop and thought I’d take some time to do a bit of analysis on some of the details. Checkout the trailer below. The most promising aspect of the trailer… Read more: Bloodstained E3 2017 Trailer Analysis - Mega Man X (SNES) Review
An Action Packed Game That Proves That Mega Man Has More To Offer Even After 6 Classic Titles! Indivisible Prototype is actually an alpha build of an upcoming, fully funded IndieGoGo campaign for the game Indivisible. Indivisible looks to be a game to keep on our radars as it advertises itself to bring together gameplay elements from Metroid and Valkyrie Profile. An interesting hybrid indeed. One thing to note when looking at the following… Read more: Indivisible Prototype Review - Batman: The Video Game (NES) Review
Batman: The Video Game is a shining example of how a licensed game should be done even if it’s rather loosely based on the film. Maybe that’s why it’s so good? Was Sunsoft concerned that consumers were incapable of determining the difference between the Batman film and the video game, thus they had to play… Read more: Batman: The Video Game (NES) Review - Castlevania (NES) ReviewA Grand Romp Amongst the Undead and Dracula’s Other Ghoulish Minions!
